Paddle Thru History on the Etowah River
Join Georgia Kayak Adventures, and spend the morning or afternoon on the lower Etowah river experiencing history from a unique perspective. If you are not a experienced kayaker or canoeist or even if its your first time in a kayak or canoe there is no need to be intimidated, your guide will teach you the techniques you need to paddle on moving water.
Georgia is rich in Civil War history, from the mountains to the sea you can follow General Sherman's fiery path from battlefield to battlefield. After battles like Resaca, Dalton and Cassville, Sherman's army had no choice but to cross the Etowah River between Cartersville and Rome. Unit histories from this period refer to units crossing the Etowah River prior to the battle of Dallas and Picket's Mill. The town of Euharlee is mentioned as a place where army units encamped after crossing the river at Island Ford.
We offer a unique perspective by providing a guided, historic interpretive tour of the Etowah River. The tour begins in beautiful Euharlee, after meeting your guide you will visit the historic covered bridge. We will then load up and head to the river. Using canoes or kayaks we will push off and head out for a 10 mile paddle on the Etowah River. Our launch is at a historic ford mentioned in period Civil War maps. Not only will you experience natural beauty of the river itself, but you will see the same crossings, breastworks and fords that Union and Confederate armies contended with when crossing the Etowah River. .
A little over half way you will stop at Island Ford, one of the main crossings for thousands of troops and your guide will set up lunch. You will have lunch enjoying the sounds of the water, and imagining what the river may have sounded like when thousands of wagons, and men were making their crossing headed to battles like Pickets Mill, Dallas, Lost Mountain, and Kennesaw Mountain.
When we arrive at our stopping points, we will get the boats loaded and return to Euharlee and your vehicle in time to enjoy a few more Civil War sites on your own.
In order to provide the best experience we try to keep the groups small. This tour is most appropriate for paddlers aged 5 and up.
